Young Lady Raiders look to erase last year’s dismal record

By The Staff

The Trimble County High School girls basketball team is gearing up for the 2008-09 season.

The Lady Raiders are practicing hard, looking to improve significantly over last season when the team tallied a lackluster 8-16 record.

Although the 2007-08 record does not seem like much to brag about, the team did have some significant, if limited, successes.

After struggling to put points on the board in most games, last year’s ball club, weighted heavily with seniors, finally came together as a team to earn the right to participate in the All-A Classic state tournament.

Following the tourney, however, the girls couldn’t keep it together and despite their collective experience fell to a tough South Oldham team in the first round of 29th District play.

Lady Raider head basketball coach Kerrie Stewart will return to the bench this year with plans to rebuild the team.

Lacking any seniors on the roster, expected to take the lead on the squad are juniors Macy Mitchell and Katie Callis and with sophomore Regan Black. Despite her young age, Black saw quite a bit of varsity court action last year, posting satisfactory numbers for the team. Together, this trio will be tasked to lead the young club against competitors such as Carroll and Gallatin counties.

The Lady Raiders will travel to Kentucky Country Day for a pre-season scrimmage Nov. 25 before opening up the season in a home game against Gallatin County Dec. 1.

In the eleven days that follow, the girls’ skills will be tested as they fight for the win against Williamstown, as well as Carroll and Grant counties

Like their male counterparts, the team is also expected to participate in a variety of tournaments throughout the season, including the North American Stainless Holiday tourney in last December, the All-A- Regional in January and the 29th District contest, hosted by North Oldham High School, in February.
