The Trimble Banner Robert L. Hillard, 74, of New Hope Road, Bedford, was arrested Sunday night, Dec. 27, after allegedly shooting a man with a small-caliber handgun. Kentucky State Police said Hillard allegedly shot Charles Irvin, 24, also of Bedford, in the shoulder and the face. Irvin was transported by Air Methods helicopter to University of Louisville hospital, where he was admitted for treatment. Irvin reportedly was in stable condition on Monday. Hillard faces one count of first-degree assault and one count of first-degree wanton endangerment.

Trooper Michael Webb, public information officer for KSP Post 5 in Campbellsburg, said Detective Todd Harwood is investigating the case. Webb said Tuesday that Hillard fired the weapon from his porch into an outbuilding where Irvin, a boyfriend of Hillard’s relative, and several other people had congregated. Webb said the motive for the shooting remains unclear, but added that Hillard has a history of mental illness.
