Carroll County fell 2-3 at home to Shelby County Tuesday April 19. Head coach Juan Fernandez said his team is not playing at its full potential. “We can blame the lack of practice due to the weather (and) the changes due to players leaving, but ultimately it’s our fault,” he said. “Some matches we have lost that we should not (have) lost due to the lack of confidence. We play the first few games, and we get behind and ultimately we just give up.”

Fernandez explained that tennis is 30 percent technical, 30 percent physical and 40 percent mental, and it is the mental part his team needs to improve on.

Results: No. 1 singles, Shelby’s Mike Karas defeats Carroll’s Raven Powers, 6-2, 7-5; No. 2 singles, Shelby’s Ethen Russell defeats Carroll’s Josh McCarty, 6-2, 6-1; No. 3 singles, Shelby’s Garret Dameron defeats Carroll’s Tim Yup, 6-4, 6-2; No. 1 doubles, Carroll’s Dakota Corbin and Leo Raffenberg defeat Shelby’s Andrew Clark and Jimmy Welman, 6-3, 6-0; and No. 2 doubles, Carroll’s Gabe Kates and Joe Gemmer defeat Shelby’s Mikey Batz and Irvin Sandora, 6-2, 6-0.

Fernandez said Powers continues to play well, but he needs to start moving the ball a little more to the sides, which will shorten the points and not expend as much energy. He also said Corbin, Kates and Gemmer have been playing very well.
