The Carrollton Fire Department responded to a grass fire between the 800 and 900 block of Fourth Street Saturday night.

The call was dispatched at 9:49 p.m., and two engines and 11 personnel arrived on scene at 9:55 p.m. according to Fire Chief Randy Tharp. Carrollton Fire requested Westside Volunteer Fire Department to assist with their brush truck. Two trucks and fire fighters responded.

The Carrollton Police Department was also called to question an employee of the property owner about the cause of the fire, which was on property owned by Barry Brown.

Tharp said the fire was an unauthorized burn within the city limits, which violates city ordinance 93.21, restrictions on open fires.

According to the ordinance, fires may be set for the following purposes, provided they do not violate any of the provisions of the Kentucky Revised Statutes or any other laws of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, if a prior written permit is obtained from the city fire chief: Fires set for the cooking of food for human consumption on other than commercial premises; Fires set for recreational or ceremonial purposes with prior written consent from the fire chief.
