An autospy is being conducted to determine the cause of death of a five-month-old Carrollton infant who died at her home Sunday, Jan. 24

Carrollton Police Department and the Carroll County Ambulance Service responded at 10:32 a.m. to 512 Hawkins Street in regard to an infant not breathing, according to a police department news release. Alexis Smith was pronounced dead at the scene by Carroll County Coroner David Wilhoite. She was the daughter of Mike and Joni Smith of Carrollton.

Carrollton Police Chief Michael Willhoite said it is standard protocol to investigate the death of an infant. Smith was taken to the medical examiner in Louisville, who is currently performing a toxicology and lab tests to determine the cause of death. Results should return in two to three weeks.

“There was no anatomical, which means trauma, cause of death,” Willhoite said.

The medical examiner will make the final determination based on the results.
