City of Carrollton has proclaimed April as Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month, according to a proclamation signed by Mayor Gene McMurry.

The document states that every child deserves to grow up in a safe, loving permanent home where his or her physical, emotional and educational needs are fully met thereby giving the child an opportunity to realize his or her full potential.

“Child abuse and neglect is a community epidemic that depends upon the education and involvement of citizens from every sector of the community,” the proclamation states. In 2013, there were 120 children in substantiated or services needed reports in Carroll County.

The city encourages all citizens should become involved in supporting families in raising their children in a safe, nurturing environment helping to prevent child abuse in the Carroll County.

“I urge all citizens, community agencies, faith groups, medical facilities, and businesses to increase their participation in mitigating the devastating effect of abuse and neglect by increasing their efforts to support families, thereby preventing child abuse and strengthening our community,” McMurry said in the proclamation.
