Downtown prepares to celebrate Another Reason to be Thankful

The election has passed and all eyes are now looking ahead to the start of the holiday season as Thanksgiving quickly approaches.

There are many reasons to be thankful, besides the fact that we won’t be bombarded with all the negative campaign advertisements.

Downtown Carrollton also has a lot to be thankful for this year. Our free wireless Internet service continues to expand and strengthen its coverage.

More than 1,450 people have made use of the free WiFi system, downloading more than 770 gigabytes of information to their computers.

Carrollton Main Street Program and merchants and businesses throughout downtown Carrollton will join together to celebrate this accomplishment and more during Another Reason to be Thankful, Saturday, Nov. 22.

This year’s event will take place on Saturday instead of a Monday, as it has in the past.

Now in its sixth year, Another Reason to be Thankful will kickoff the holiday shopping season for downtown merchants downtown. Stores and shops will have special “hot buys” throughout the day, along with holiday open houses for their customers.

To make the event even more exciting, merchants have joined with the Main Street Program  to put together a giveaway valued at more than $300.

A basket will be given away containing items ranging from a $50 savings bond, two lunches for two and gift certificates valued at up the $30 to savings coupons and an envelope filled with $150 in Chamber of Commerce gift certificates that spend just like cash.

Winning is easy. Just stop by participating merchants in the downtown area and register to win. The more businesses that you visit, the better the chances are that your name will be the lucky one that is drawn.

The drawing is scheduled to take place Saturday, Nov. 22 at 5 p.m. at McNeal’s on Fifth Street.

In addition to all of the great buys merchants will have, it’s a wonderful opportunity for us to support our local economy by shopping at home this year. Don’t miss out on this Carrollton’s holiday kickoff.

A Christmas Carroll

It’s time to mark your calendars as we prepare to celebrate A Christmas Carroll on Saturday, Dec. 6.

The annual Christmas festival will feature visits with Santa Claus, a crafts tent, music, the  Visions of Sugar Plums Cooking Contest, carriage rides, tree lighting and more.

Watch for more details on A Christmas Carroll in the weeks ahead.

Also watch for information on this year’s snowman decorating contest.

Businesses and groups with snowmen from last year are encouraged to redecorate them for 2008. Plus, 20 new snowmen will be available for adoption in the next couple of weeks.

Snowmen can be adopted for a $15 donation to the Main Street Program.

We hope to see snowmen all around downtown greeting visitors and adding to our holiday decorations.
