Our sons, four-year-old Connor and one-year-old Dane Mefford have a rare disease called Fanconi Anemia. While the diagnosis helped to explain previous medical problems, the news was devastating.
Fanconi Anemia is a rare genetic disease that impacts one in 500,000 children in the world. There is no known cure. FA affects the body’s ability to produce stem cells and conduct DNA repair. This leads to bone marrow failure, leukemia and other cancers at a very early age. Few people with this disorder live to adulthood.
Both Connor and Dane will have to receive a bone marrow transplant sometime in their lives. This is so hard on a mother and father who are supposed to be able to do anything to help their children. We are not the type of people to roll over and give up. We have decided to fight back. The only way that we know how to fight back is to find a cure for this terrible disease. The only way this can be done is through research.
We are asking the community to help save our boys lives. We are having a fundraiser on Saturday, May 1 at DRC Industries, 904 Hawkins Street in Carrollton. The fundraiser will include a yard sale, bake sale, inflatables for the kids, food, silent auction and a corn hole tournament. In honor of Derby Day there will be a Turtle Race. All proceeds are going to the Fanconi Anemia Research Fund. The event will start at 8 a.m. and run until 2 p.m.
The corn hole tournament will start at 10 a.m. with a $25 entrance fee. Cash prizes will be given out for the winners. If you are interested in entering the corn hole tournament or would like to donate to the yard sale or silent auction please call 502-480-6674 or e-mail me at firstname.lastname@example.org. Thank you in advance for your help.
