Firefighters to collect funds for Crusade

This community has always been very supportive of its causes whether it be Relay for Life, Susan G. Komen Foundation or the WHAS Crusade for Children. As a member of the Carrollton Fire Department, I want to thank you for your past support of the Crusade and, again, appeal to you for your continued support of this great cause as the Crusade kickoff is upon us.

Since 1956 when the first fire department in Kentucky joined forces with WHAS to pledge their support to disabled children, fire fighters have been a vital part of the Crusade. Fire departments now raise about 50 percent of donations pledged each year in Kentuckiana. One hundred percent of all donations will benefit the Crusade, and all money raised stays locally in our community. Each year Carrollton Fire, along with Carroll County Rescue, Worthville Fire, Westside Fire and other community members and organizations have taken on the task to help raise money for our children who might be of special need.

We accomplish our mission through door-to-door collection, roadblocks, golf scrambles and any other activity we feel we can generate a nickel here or a dime there. However, with 2010, our tactics must change and so must our thinking. The Kentucky Department of Transportation has stated that our organizations will no longer be allowed to impede the flow of traffic on state or federal highways. Thus, you will not see us on Hwy. 42 or 227; 11th Street is also out of the question. But, what you will see is our equipment out at different community events trying to make up for lost opportunities.

This weekend Carrollton Fire will be at the Pioneer Power Club’s Antique Tractor Show collecting donations. We will also be selling chances for a raffle that will be drawn later in the month. The fire engine will be there for the kids, young and old, to take a look at. We only hope that we can give you ample opportunities to donate to a cause that is so much larger than all of us. Again, we want to thank you for your donation.
