The Ghent Fire Protection District extinguished a car fire on Hwy. 227 Wednesday.

Vickie Payton had just pulled up to Jeff Flood State Farm at 2030 Hwy. 227 when she smelled and saw smoke coming from the car. She attempted to lift the hood, but it was already on fire.

Payton, her daughter and her two grandchildren exited the vehicle and were unharmed.

The call came in at 3:26 p.m., and Ghent firefighters arrived on scene at 3:39 p.m. Lt. Josh Glacken said the car was a total loss, and the insurance office suffered minor damage because of the proximity of the vehicle and the wind.

He said he called the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office for a damage report on the structure.

Glacken said seven firefighters and three pieces of equipment were on scene. Ghent Fire cleared from the run at 4:39 p.m.
