Jean Vinson Cartmell Lemme Masten, 77, formerly of Carrollton, died July 9, 2012, after a long and courageous battle with multiple myeloma. She will be missed by her family and friends and remembered for her kind spirit, love for learning and sharing family history and love of singing. A memorial service was held on Saturday, July 14 at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Warner Robins, Ga.
Mrs. Masten, the daughter of the late Richard Bacon Cartmell and Gladys Graham Cartmell, grew up in Carrollton, Kentucky. Her father was a former superintendent of Carroll County Schools. She graduated from Carrollton High School, attended the University of Kentucky and graduated from Fort Valley State College in 1968 after moving to Georgia with her late husband, Carl Eugene Lemme who died in 1983. Mrs. Masten is also predeceased by her second husband, John “Jack” G. Masten of Cincinnati, Ohio.
She taught in the Bibb County Public Schools. She worked as a long term care ombudsman and as station manager for the Georgia Radio Reading Service in Macon. She served as a Girl Scout leader for many years and was an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. After moving to Cincinnati, she enjoyed being a “roadie” for Jack as he played keyboard and bass with “Our Choice” and other combos.
Mrs. Masten is survived by her daughter, Susan Lemme; son, John(Joy) Lemme; grandsons, Justin and Joshua Lemme; brother, James Holton Cartmell; sister, Ann Graham Hussey; and brother-in-law, John “Jack” Castle Hussey; her cousins, Holton Cartmell, David Cartmell, Rebecca Cartmell, Charles James “Jim” Graham, Peggy Graham White, and Robert Graham; and nieces and nephews, John Hussey, Michael Hussey, Richard Hussey, Laurie Cartmell Easterling and Lynn Cartmell Herge.
In lieu of flowers, family requests donations to the Gladys Cartmell Library fund at the Richard Bacon Cartmell Elementary School.
