The Carroll County High School varsity volleyball team passed, set and spiked their way to victory in the first match of the season Tuesday, Aug. 12.
The girls volleyball team played at Williamstown, winning the first game 25-11 and second game – and the match – 25-23.
It was the Lady Panthers’ first step toward the team’s goal of taking the championship this year.
“We really want to earn a banner to hang on the gym wall,” sophomore Kyndal Curry explained. “We’ve been first runner-up in the [North Central Kentucky Conference] many times, but this year we want to get first so we can get that banner.”
Junior Valerie White predicts this will be a good year for the team, which, she said, works very well together. “I feel confident that this will be a winning season.”
In the Williamstown match, “we pulled together as a team and it led us to victory,” she said. “We work really hard practicing three hours a day, five days a week, just so we can have that incredible feeling we get after winning a game.”
Despite losing some key seniors from last year’s team, head Coach Wilbert Lowe III said he believes the team will do well.
“We have a young team this year. We have three seniors, three juniors, and some sophomores and freshmen,” he said. “I think it’s going to be a very interesting, but very surprising season.”
This year’s seniors are Devon Hill, Marisa Ruckel and Dorothy Karcher.
One of the team’s strengths is working together on offense, Curry said. “Our team is really good about focusing and helping each other out.”
Lowe said this year has changed offensive strategy. “We’ve run a triple diamond for the past couple years, but now we’re running a 4-2.”
The triple-diamond system uses three setters, while the 4-2 offensive features four attackers and two setters. An advantage to the new system, he said, is that there always is a setter in the front row.
Lowe hopes that this change will allow for stronger attacks.
The Lady Panthers played Henry County in a home match yesterday, Aug. 19, after press time. The next home game is 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27, against Walton-Verona.
