The Carrollton Lions Club has added a new event to the schedule of activities for this year’s Carroll County Tobacco Festival. The organization is sponsoring its first 5K run and walk on Saturday morning, September 26, on Lock Road, starting and ending at the back entrance to General Butler State Resort Park. The course follows Lock Road 3.1 miles from the park to the Kentucky River.

Larry Morgan, Tony Gossom and David Wilhoite, representing the Lions Club, made a brief presentation at the Aug. 11 meeting of Carroll County Fiscal Court seeking financial support for the 5K. Lions members also made a pitch to the Carrollton City Council last week. Both organizations told the group that they are unable to provide funding for the type of event the Lions Club is promoting, although both government entities were quick to praise the Lions for the good civic work they do.

Morgan said the club has secured permission from the state for use of the road. He said 20 to 25 club members will be present along the route on the day of the run/walk to ensure safety and that the participants are adequately hydrated.

“We have talked to 85 to 90 percent of the people who live along the road out there and they all seemed very positive about it,” Morgan said.

Runners will begin their run at 8:30 a.m., while walkers will start at 8:36 a.m. Morgan estimated the event would conclude by 10 a.m.

Entry fees are $20 in advance, or $24 on the day of the event, Morgan said. Each participant will receive a t-shirt. Refreshments will be available. Medals and ribbons will be awarded to top finishers in eight categories.

Proceeds from the event will help the Lions Club with their program to provide glasses and eye examinations for financially-challenged families and school children in Carroll County.

“We’re trying to make the 5K a first-class event,” Morgan said. “Hopefully, after the first year it will be financially self-sufficient.”

The 61st Carroll County Tobacco Festival is set for the September 24-26 on the Courthouse square and will feature an outhouse race, cornhole tournament, amusement rides, arts and crafts, flea market, games, a parade, food vendors, musical entertainment and the Lions Club 5K run/walk.
