Date:
01/23/2014 - 7:00pm

Noted religious leader and “Nuns on the Bus” founder Sister Simone Campbell will speak at Hanover College, Thursday, Jan. 23.

Campbell's appearance, part of the Bill and June Rogers Speaker Series, will begin at 7 p.m. in the Withrow Student Activities Center and is open to the public free of charge.

Campbell, an attorney and public speaker with extensive experience in public policy and advocacy for systemic change, is the executive director of NETWORK. The Washington, D.C.-based organization educates, organizes and lobbies for economic and social transformation, particularly on issues of peace-building, public policy, immigration reform, healthcare and economic justice.

Campbell’s influential “Nuns on the Bus” tours have received attention across the nation from religious communities, elected officials and the media. She has often been featured in the national and international media, including recent appearances on “60 Minutes,” “The Colbert Report” and “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.”

During the 2010 congressional healthcare reform debate, Campbell wrote the famous “nuns’ letter” supporting the reform bill and garnered support from 59 leaders of Catholic Sisters, including Leadership Conference of Women Religious.

Cited by many as critically important in passing the Affordable Care Act, President Obama thanked Campbell for her efforts and and invited her to the ceremony to celebrate the act’s signing into law.

In 2012, she was instrumental in organizing the “Nuns on the Bus” tour of nine states to oppose the U.S. House of Representatives’ approval of House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan’s budget plan that would reduce programs designed to help people in need.

Early last summer, she led another cross-country “Nuns on the Bus” trip focused on comprehensive immigration reform.
