This weekend marks the 61st anniversary of Unlimited hydroplane racing in Madison, and race fans will see 12 of the world’s fastest boats vie for the Lucas Oil Indiana Governor’s Cup, the first stop on the six-event 2011 Air National Guard H1 Unlimited Series schedule. The hydros will compete on a new, shortened 1.67-mile Bill Cantrell Memorial Race Course.
Local fans are eagerly awaiting the battles among these thundering 200-mph-plus competitors to see whether the hometown team, Oh Boy! Oberto/Miss Madison, will be ready to defend their back-to-back-to-back National High Points Championship while wearing the U-1 designation for the third straight time in its long-storied history.
Testing and Qualifying occur on Friday with the popular “Pole Position” Unlimited qualifications set between 2:30 – 4:30 p.m. Saturday brings more testing in the morning with the first sets of heat racing starting at 1:15 p.m. with more heat racing all day Sunday leading up to the final heat at 4:20 p.m.
In addition to the unlimited hydroplanes, the boat racing tour Powerboat P1 USA will be making its first stop in the United States at the Madison Regatta and will be running all weekend long.
