One dead in apparent murder

(Smithfield, KY) – Detectives from Kentucky State Police Post 5 are continuing their investigation into an apparent murder in Henry County.

KSP Post 5 Dispatch received a call of a shooting occurring at 7634 Ballardsville Road in Smithfield, Ky. at 3:19 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 1. When troopers arrived on scene, they discovered that Joseph Bibelhauser, 61, had been shot in the head as a result of a property dispute with the alleged perpetrator, according to a KSP news release. Bibelhauser was later pronounced dead at the scene.

The alleged perpetrator, James Fowler, 57, of Smithfield, Ky., was later charged with murder and lodged at the Carroll County Regional Detention Center, according to state police. He is being held on a $100,000 cash bond.

KSP Detective Kurt Buhts is leading the investigation. Eminence Police Department, Henry County EMS and Henry County Deputy Coroner, Mike Paris, assisted Buhts at the scene.
