regional championship

Next matchup against Trimble County Raiders

Carroll defeated Williamstown and Owen County en route to a match up against Trimble County in the regional championship of the All A 8th Region tournament to be held on April 19 at 5:30 p.m. at Bedford.

The Panthers defeated Williamstown 7-1 Thursday, setting up Saturday’s match up with the Rebels.
Carroll held a 4-2 advantage when the skies opened up and drenched the field with rain. The game continued Sunday afternoon, and Carroll picked up right where it had left off. The Panthers scored three runs in the top of the third inning to lead 7-2.

Carroll head coach Jay Jones said the third was when the “craziness” began. He said there were a couple of calls that did not go Owen’s way, and the dugout erupted after one call in particular. Jones said he warned his team that this could cause the momentum to swing back toward the Rebels.

He was right.

Owen scored two runs in the third, 7-4, before plating another five in the fifth inning, putting them ahead 9-7. Panther starting pitcher Ethan Stewart began having some control problems, so Jones brought in Trey Boles part of the way through the inning.

Down 9-8 in the top of the seventh inning, Zach Wise hit a grounder to shortstop, but reached first on an error. From there, he stole second base and then third base. The throw was high off of the third baseman’s glove and rolled to the fence, allowing Wise to tie the game. Jones noted this was particularly impressive because Wise stole the bases on a bad wheel, twisting his ankle in the third inning.

In the top of the ninth inning, Austin Crowell walked, and Wise hit a single. Dillon Craig hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Crowell, 10-9. The Panthers held on in the bottom of the inning to get the win. Tyler Gross came in to pitch the last three innings, getting the win.

While it was an exciting game for the fans, Jones said it was a statistical nightmare, with both teams committing half a dozen errors. Nonetheless, he said he was happy to get the win and excited to play Trimble in the regional championship.
