Program series offers secrets to improve grilling skills

-A A +A

Grills are great for cooking hamburgers and steaks.  Unfortunately, many people stop there.

An entire gourmet meal can be prepared on a grill, or using other outdoor cooking equipment, including any assortment of meat, vegetables and even desserts.

If you are interested in becoming the next grillmeister of your community, with the reputation of being a great outdoor chef, we’ve got a series of programs designed for you.

The Owen, Gallatin, and Carroll County Extension Services will be holding a series of evening programs demonstrating some potential uses of the grill. The first one will be held at the Owen County Extension Office at 365 Ellis Hwy, Owenton at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 16. The topic will be direct grilling. Future programs in the series will be indirect grilling and other methods of outdoor cooking.

As a large meal will be provided, pre-registration will be required. Call the Extension Office at (502) 732-7030. There will be a limit to the number of people accepted, so if you are interested, call early. Deadline for registration is Tuesday afternoon, June 14. Sorry, but we will not be able to accept registrations after the deadline.  There is no registration fee for the classes.

Pesticide certification

There will be a restricted use pesticide certification class at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 14 at the Carroll County Extension Office. This will qualify anyone needing a card to purchase restricted use pesticides for use on their farms.

The certification will be good for 3 years and there is no charge for the certification.

Carroll County Fair

The Carroll County Fair has kicked off and will run through June 11. Kissel Entertainment is the new amusement company and I can tell you that it looks like they brought the good stuff. The fair has a Facebook page with events and other activities at the fair.

Farm Field Day

There will be a Farm Field Day Tuesday, July 12, at the Bob Luckhardt Farm on Pardue Road in Ghent. The day will begin at 5:30 and end with a twilight meal. Look for more details next week.

RiverView Farmers Market

The market will have some cole crops, eggs, hanging baskets, flowers, crafts, and jams and jellies. Tomatoes are not too far away and some of the small fruits will be coming on soon. The market is again accepting WIC and senior citizen coupons.
