Community picnic set for Sunday

By Dave Taylor

Periodically heavy rains Sunday forced a one-week postponement of the annual Community Picnic presented by the Family Worship Center of Carrollton.

The event had been scheduled for Sunday afternoon at the Carroll County Fair Grounds. Rain clouds that swept through the Ohio River valley Sunday dumped 2.7 inches of precipitation on Carrollton, according the Carrollton Kentucky Mesonet weather station.

“At 9:30 Sunday morning it was obvious it wasn’t going to work,” Pastor Pat Butcher said. He said the church will try to hold the event this Sunday.

All activities will still be on the schedule with the exception of the draft horse pull.

“The horse pull people have another event scheduled somewhere else so they won’t be able to be here,” Butcher said. “We’ll still have the car show, the tractor pull, the inflatables, the pony rides.”

Headline musicians Blaine Bowman and His Goodtime Band are question marks at this point, according to the pastor, but if the Bowman family cannot be rescheduled, “we’ll still have bluegrass gospel music and some contemporary music out there all day,” he said.

Gates at the fairgrounds will open at noon this Sunday, Sept. 27, for the rescheduled event. There is no gate fee to attend the event, which is a ministry outreach of the church located at 2520 Hwy. 227 in Carrollton. The Community Picnic runs from noon until 6 p.m., featuring food and drinks and an afternoon full of entertainment.

“We’re here to serve the community and we know a lot of people look forward to (the picnic) every year,” said Butcher.
