Senior Event features railroad theme Sept. 12

The 2013 Carroll County Senior Event, themed “We’ve Been Working on the Railroad,” will be held  from 4:30 p.m. until sundown, Thursday, Sept. 12 at Point Park in Carrollton. This year’s event will bring back old memories when the L&N trains were such a part of daily life in Carrollton, Worthville, Sanders and other surrounding towns.

All senior citizens from Carroll and other counties are invited to join in the festivities planned for this year’s event.

Participants are invited to dress as they might when working on the railroad, taking a journey to see family and friends in years gone by, even being one of those old familiar hobos riding the trains and living under the tracks or another character involved in railroading.

This year’s event will feature bluegrass and train music, a meal fit for a king hobo, lots of old memorabilia, and treasured photos featuring trains and people involved in railroading in the area. There will be a chance to have your photo taken in a nostalgic backdrop and participate in a scavenger hunt to identify some mighty lofty characters.

The Senior Event will have its usual costume contest with a male and female winner selected.

There will be a special prize for the oldest male and the oldest female present that night.

Local businesses and organizations are invited to decorate a trunk especially for the event using a theme or idea representative of something about railroad travel. Prizes will be awarded for the winner.

Guests may bring their own lawn chair if they wish. Anyone needing transportation that evening may call the Carroll County Senior Center at (502) 732-7026 or the Carroll County Extension office at (502) 732-7030.

Residents interested in volunteering to help at the event by serving food or in another way should call Christin Herbst at the Extension office at (502) 732-7030. Able bodied physical help is also needed to help set up during the day on Thursday.
