Sparta man indicted for filing false tax returns

The U.S. Attorney’s Office and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) jointly announced today that an indictment was unsealed yesterday charging a Sparta, Ky., man with filing false tax returns.

The indictment alleges that Meredith L. Lawrence, 61, filed false tax returns in 2005, 2006, and 2007. According to the indictment, Lawrence’s income was greater than he reported on his returns.

Lawrence was arraigned yesterday and entered a plea of not guilty to each count of the indictment. Trial is scheduled for December 21, 2011.
