Members of the Trimble County High School boys golf team are excited about the upcoming season.
The team finished with a 9-3 conference record last season, and hopes to top that this year.
Dylan Staples led the way last year with an average score of 38, followed by Jordan Tingle, who averaged 41 per outing.
With both Staples and Tingle returning and a very strong No. 3 starter in eighth-grader Tanner Stark, the team is looking to build on last year’s record, with backup from freshmen Colton Perry, Zach Beard and Conner Beard.
Also in the mix are returning eighth-graders Josh Creech and Marcus Fitzgerald, along with a fine group of sixth- and seventh-graders who are new to the team. The newcomers look to make a positive contribution to this year’s scores.
One newcomer may even be a top scorer, which would come in handy in competition.
Last year, Walton-Verona High School’s team topped the league, and they, too, are returning many of their starters.
With that in mind, the TCHS boys are even more focused on improving in hopes of taking the top spot in the conference this year.
Staples looks to return to the state competition from a year ago. Tingle, who missed the state competition by one stroke, hopes to rebound with a qualifying score this year.
Stark wasn’t that far off last year and has an outside chance to make his way to state; he is capable of playing a great round in the qualifying competition.
Many team members have been working on their swings and golfing every chance they get, and that definitely will help to improve their scores from the previous season.
So far this year, the boys are 2-0. They defeated Owen County High School by 18 strokes, and Williamstown by a crushing 57 strokes.
Beard proved to be the Man of the Match in the Owen match, shooting a personal best of 45. And Stark received the Man of the Match award vs. Williamstown for two straight rounds of 42.
