Is Your Library Cool? I say YES!!

Cool is not often a word one uses to describe a library.  I was fortunate enough to change one patron’s mind about libraries’ coolness factor; and I hope I am able to change yours.  Stereotypes are always present in this world and libraries are not exempt from them.  Librarians are usually described as old, obsessed with silence, and mean.  This could not be further from the truth.  I like to think we are very far from this stereotype.  It is always our goal to provide a warm and welcoming environment so our patrons feel comfortable coming to us for help.

People also assume that we only have books and any other media we have is probably very old and outdated.  We have touted this before, but we continue to grow our DVD collection with copies of all new releases and have started to stock many of your favorite television series.  I don’t believe many people expect we would carry the television series Dexter, but we have all four seasons.  And we are always open to recommendations.  I will never claim to know everything you, as a community, would like for us to provide.  I do rely on our patrons to help us in this endeavor.  Music is another place we continue to grow our collections.  It is not just easy listening and classical (although we do have a fabulous classical selection).  We have several new artists, Top 40 (Ke$ha), country (Zac Brown Band), rock (Brandon Flowers), R&B (Usher), world (Juanes), and GLEE (by the way, I do love GLEE).  One of my personal new favorites is Mumford & Sons’ new release Sigh No More.

Programming is where I feel like we truly up the ante on coolness.  Each month we provide an outlet for local artists to proudly display their works.  Each month we provide a venue for local musicians to play.  Each month we show movies that best recreates a movie theatre setting without a movie theatre cost.  Ms. Leslie and Patricia work extremely hard to provide the best Children’s and Adult programs in the community.  We have two book groups and several opportunities to learn how to knit, crochet, sew, and quilt.  There are three opportunities each week for different story hours and a monthly themed party.  More importantly, it provides an opportunity to meet new people with common interests.  This is where we create our loving library community.  I think our library community is pretty darn cool!!
