Electronic waste, also known as e-waste, is a rapidly growing portion of the household solid waste stream. Common examples of e-waste are computers, monitors, televisions, cell phones, VCRs and video game systems.
According to Electronics TakeBack Coalition, computers are replaced every 3-4 years, TVs are replaced every 5-7 years, and cell phones are replaced more frequently. At these high replacement rates, more than 3.4 million tons were generated in 2012, with only 29.2 percent being recycled.
