• Port William seeks donations for upcoming auction Aug. 12

    The Port William Historical Society met on May 23, at the Masterson House with 22 guests and members in attendance. President Deborah Garrett introduced the guest speaker, Jerry Raisor, curator at the Kentucky Department of Parks. He discussed the history of the Kentucky River as it pertains to geology and commerce.

    The March meeting minutes were read by secretary Cassandra McBurney and approved as read. Treasurer Sam Burgess handed out a copy of the financial report and it was approved.

  • Smiths celebrate 60 years

    Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Smith will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on Thursday, June 8, 2017. Ike and Mary Lou were married at the Ghent Baptist Church in 1957 where they are still active members.

    Ike retired as general manager from Kentucky Ladder Company after 42 years. Mary Lou retired after 30 years as secretary of Cartmell School and two years of teaching in Carroll County. They enjoy gardening, traveling and spending time with family and friends.

  • Owen DAR chapter remembers Vietnam

    The John Guill-Polly Hawkins Craig Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) held their May meeting at the Two Rivers Restaurant, General Butler State Resort Park in Carrollton, Kentucky on May 24.

    In recognition of the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War, the chapter welcomed Mr. John Osborne of Dry Ridge as its guest speaker.

  • Honoring Our Heroes

    U.S. Army veteran Clay Cable was the featured speaker of the “Honoring our heroes” event. He opened his speech by explaining that the definition of a hero is a common man doing uncommon things. This can be out of fear, out of love or because he or she was ordered to do so. Firefighters, police officers, EMS workers and other first responders are every day heroes.
