  • Butler State Park presents Audubon ‘love story’ tonight

    General Butler State Resort Park, together with Kentucky Chautauqua, presents a living-history drama, “Lucy Bakewell Audubon: A Kentucky Love Story,” at 7 p.m. today, Wednesday, April 20, in the Lodge Lounge.

    Lucy Bakewell Audubon was the wife of John James Audubon, the famed naturalist, artist and author of “Birds of America.” She felt she was “perfectly suited” for him and was incredibly devoted to him. She made enormous sacrifices and suffered public scorn as she supported her husband’s talents.

  • Nonprofit grant application deadline May 31

    Ohio Valley United Charities Inc. is accepting applications for $80,000 in grant money for nonprofit organizations in Carroll, Gallatin, Henry, Owen and Trimble counties for 2012.
    Applications are due by noon Tuesday, May 31.

    Organizations seeking funds must apply using the form provided by United Charities and must attach a copy of its most recent IRS certification that the organization is a 501(c)(3) entity.

  • McArter, Valdez to wed April 29

    Gary and Tara McArter of Carrollton, Ky. announce the upcoming wedding of their daughter, Laci Jae McArter, to Cedric Ryan Valdez, son of Yvette Sanchez of Phoenix, Ariz.

    The bride-elect is a 2008 graduate of Carroll County High School.

    The-groom-to-be is a 2008 graduate of Deer Valley High School in Phoenix, Ariz.

    Both graduated in 2009 from the Air Force Avionics Academy in Keesler, Miss., earning bachelor’s degrees in avionics system maintenance. Each has attained the rank of Airman 1st Class.

  • CCAS celebrates Week for the Animals

    Members of Carroll County Animal Support donated 14 books to Kathryn Winn Primary School’s library Monday, April 11, as part of the local celebration of Kentucky Week for the Animals. The books teach about how to care for pets and the importance of adopting shelter dogs and cats.

    The Ecumenical Prayer Service sponsored by the Carroll County Ministerial Association is 12:10-12:50 p.m. at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church on Good Friday, April 22. People of all faiths are invited to spend a half hour of prayer and reflection on this Good Friday of the Lord’s Passion.

  • Not everyone’s going to enjoy a special recipe

    We just spent a week of vacation with our son, daughter-in-law and four grandchildren — ages 1, 2, 4 and 10 — in Florida.

    In that group we have some very picky eaters, including the adults. As much as I love them all, I do get a little disturbed because they all eat a lot of snack foods. The general menu for the 2- and 4- year-olds is chicken fingers and French fries, no vegetables. Their mother is trying to get them to eat better, but their habit of eating snack foods that it makes it very difficult for her.

  • There's a new doctor in the house

    Workers who sustain injuries on the job will find a new face at Carroll County Memorial Hospital ready to assist them with their recovery.

    Dr. Sherrell Nunnelley assumed his full-time role as medical director of occupational medicine two weeks ago, but he has been working at CCMH a couple of days each week for the past two months.

    “For the past 20 years, I have been taking care of all kinds of injuries,” Nunnelley said.

  • Relay for Life pageant set for April 23 at CCMS

    Relay for Life Pageant will be held Saturday, April 23 and open to everyone fitting the age requirements.

    Age categories are: pre-teen, 8-11; teen: 12-15; and miss, 16-21. The entry fee is $25 for pre-teen and teen, and $30 for miss. All proceeds go to Relay for Life.

    The pageant will be held in the auditorium at  Carroll County Middle School. Admission is $3 and  free for children 5 and under.
