  • Perkinson takes on Boston

    Ronald Perkinson Jr., 41, of Carrollton was a participant in the 2017 Boston Marathon, Monday, April 17. He ran the 26.1 miles in 2:48.04, which was under his goal of three hours. His pace was 6:45 per mile. Perkinson is the son of Anna and Ronald Perkinson Sr. of Carrollton. His wife, Kim, and daughters, Lauren and Megan, were there to cheer him on.

    The following children were the winners of the News Democrat Easter Coloring contest:

    Ages 5 and under: Blake Taylor, son of Ryan and Dawn Taylor of Milton, Ky.; Ages 6-9: John Wesley Perkins III, son of Jessica and John Perkins, Jr. of Carrollton and Ages 10-13: Charityn Marsh, daughter of Chasity Riley and Chad Marsh both of Carroll County.

  • Local fundraiser for C’ton woman’s brain surgery

    A Carrollton woman is hosting a fundraiser called Shop for Chiari April 22, to raise money for her brain surgery.

    LeaAnn Routon, 28, has Chiari Malformation, a structural abnormality at the back of her brain and skull. It is a condition that is rarely diagnosed, and many doctors are not well educated on her condition, she said in an email. In July, she will be traveling to New York City for the first of several brain surgeries to treat this congenital birth defect.

    Carrollton Main Street Program’s Easter on the Square returns to downtown Carrollton on Saturday, April 15.

    The festivities are set for the lawn of the Carroll County Courthouse this year.

    New this year is the Bunny Hop 5K Run/Walk, with registration beginning at 9:30 a.m. The event begins at 10 a.m.

    Games, inflatables, music, food and more are planned on the rear lawn of the courthouse beginning at 1 p.m., when the Easter Bunny arrives.

    Mary Ann Gentry Art Show 2017, “Naturally Mary Ann” is accepting two items that have never been displayed in previous shows in categories: drawings, paintings, sculpture and photography until Wednesday April 19. This is open to the public.     National Library Week started in 1958, and was based on the idea that once people were motivated to read, they would support libraries. The first National Library Week theme was “Wake Up and Read!” Fast forward 59 years and the theme is “Libraries Transform.” This reflects the transformation of libraries over the years. As our lives, families and communities change, so must our libraries. We have so many resources at your disposal–some you associate with libraries and some you may not.
