  A big thanks goes out to all 4-H exhibitors and judges for participating in the 2012 Carroll County Fair last week.

In the exhibit hall, the 4-H Grand Champion went to Jessica Foster, who entered a senior black and white drawing. The category consisted of items made through the use of drawing lines using pen, pencil, charcoal, markers or chalk.

The 4-H Reserve Grand Champion went to Haley Hendrick, who entered a photography collection.  This category consisted of three photographs, each from three different points of view of the same subject.

Humans are not the only ones that suffer from the heat of summer.  Farm animals feel the heat too.  With summer temperatures already upon us, it is time to think about ways to know when your livestock may be in danger from the heat and what to do to reduce their plight.

One of my favorite things about summer is having fresh “vineripe” fruits and vegetables available. It’s too good to miss.

Growing up on a farm in southwestern Michigan meant a large part of my spring and summer involved picking (harvesting) an endless bounty of fresh fruits and vegetables and helping my mother can and freeze them for our winter enjoyment. 

My father was not only a fruit farmer — as were many of his relatives and other families in that region of Michigan — we had a small herd of about 40 prized Guernsey cattle.

 Kentucky is known for its rolling hills, but these hills can pose great dangers when navigated by inexperienced all-terrain vehicle drivers. 

Under-standing how to safely ride on hills is important for ATV drivers of all ages and experience levels.

Realize that some hills may be too steep for safe travel, regardless of driver age and ability.
