 With a little understanding, Expected Progeny Differences may actually be the best tool producers have to address the genetics of their herds.

While calculating EPD takes a lot of math, producers do not have to do the math; they just need to understand the answers. The calculation results usually appear in the first pages of a sire summary before the actual EPD tables. They may look a little confusing, but the information is very beneficial. It comes down to the fact that you are buying the DNA of a particular animal.

Potential counselors, today is the deadline to get in your application for 4-H Camp to the Carroll County Extension Office.  Counselors include:  Adults, ages 18 and over; teen, ages 15 to 17; counselor-in-training, age 14.  There are a limited number of positions, so contact the Extension Office at (502) 732-7030 if you are interested.

The deadline for camper applications is May 30.  Spots are filling up quickly!  4-H Camp is a four-day, three-night camp held on July 2-5, 2012.

The Carroll County Conservation District will accept requests for cost share funding under the Kentucky Soil Erosion and Water Quality Cost Share and Environmental Stewardship Program May 14 through June 15.          

The Kentucky Soil Erosion and Water Quality Cost Share Program along with the Environ-mental Stewardship Program are created to help agricultural operations protect the soil and water resources of Kentucky. 

Moving houseplants outside in late spring or early summer is good for them because they get better air circulation and light exposure. This also is a good time to repot your container-bound plants.

Wait to move plants outdoors until at least mid- to late-May, or when the weather is consistently warm.  Since most houseplants have a tropical origin, temperatures below 40 to 45 degrees Fahrenheit might damage them.
