  • Canning workshop cancelled; other preservation classes offered

    Due to low response, the Basic Canning Workshop planned for this Thursday, July 14, at the Carroll County Exten-sion office is cancelled.

    I will teach a Mini-Canning work-shop from 5-8 p.m. Thurs-day, July 21, at the Exten-sion office. Cost is $5.

  • Beef training July 14; UK grazing school Aug. 15-16

    There are several producers still needing to obtain Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) training to be eligible for cost-share with Cattle Genetics and Cattle Handling Facilities.

    A final makeup class is set for 7 p.m. Thurs-day, July 14, at the Carroll County Exten-sion Office. The fee is $5 per person, and the training takes a little over an hour. We will accept cash; checks must be made out to the Kentucky Beef Network.

  • Farm Field Day set for Luckhardt farm in Ghent

    Farm Field Day is Tuesday, July 12, at the Bob Luckhardt Farm on Pardue Road in Ghent.

    Signs will be at Sharon Road and Hwy. 47 and at Pardue Road and Sharon Road. The road sign says Purdue Road.

    The day will begin at 6 p.m. and end with a twilight meal.

    Ray Smith, Extension forage specialist, will talk about what was done in seeding clovers this spring and the issues facing our pastures after the drought last year.

  • Blue Star allows military families to visit museums free

    The National Endowment for the Arts and Blue Star Families announce the launch of the second Blue Star Museums, a partnership with more than 1,300 museums across America. Participating museums offer free admission to all active duty military personnel and their families from Memorial Day through Labor Day 2011.

  • Final 4-H Camp Orientation June 30

    The final 4-H Camp Orientation will be Thursday, June 30 at the Carroll County Extension Office which is located at 500 Floyd Drive. The sessions begin at 6 p.m. You need to attend if you did not attend the first one.

    You will be signing up for your camp classes at the orientation and we will be going over camper expectations, what to bring, what not to bring and an overview of what will be going on during camp week. I am excited as we have over 50 kids signed up for camp this year.

  • Spending money on experiences will increase your level of happiness

    We all want to be happy, but many people don’t realize how this affects our spending. We all have things that we need or want to buy that we think will make us happy, and those things often do bring us some pleasure. But maybe we’re not doing ourselves as much of a favor as we think.

    Have you ever bought something because a TV commercial said you need it to be happy? Are you buying something because you are trying to keep up with others? How long will this pleasure really last? How long will something we buy make us happy?

  • Ghent hosts July 12 farm field day; 4-H camp orientation set

    There will be a Farm Field Day Tuesday, July 12, at the Bob Luckhardt Farm on Pardue Road in Ghent.

    Signs will be at Sharon Road and Hwy. 47 and at Pardue and Sharon roads. I think the road sign may say Purdue Road.

    The day will begin at 6 p.m. and end with a twilight meal. Topics will be seeding techniques, restoring high traffic areas, warm season grasses, winter limit feeding of livestock, watering system options and dead animal composting.

  • Extension Homemakers raise funds at Relay for Life

    Carroll County Extension Homemakers participated in the 2011 Relay for Life Friday, June 17 at the Carroll County Fairgrounds. 

    Sister Teddy Nolan was the lucky winner of the beautiful caring lap quilt made by Home-makers’ president Gloria Lindsay. All funds were  donated to the Carroll County Relay for Life cancer effort.

  • County FSA board nominations due by June 15

    Nominations for Farm Service Agency county committees will open on Wednesday, June 15, Agriculture Commissioner Richie Farmer has announced.

    Nominations must be postmarked or received in a local U.S. Department of Agriculture Service Center by Aug. 1. FSA will mail ballots to eligible voters on Nov. 4. Ballots will be due back to the county office by Dec. 5. Newly elected committee members and alternates will take office Jan. 2, 2012.

  • 4-Hers qualify for state fair

    4-H winners at the Carroll County were Jessica Foster with three art entries, Haley Hendrick with two photography entries, Tristan Louden with five entries in the crafts area and Haley Tharp with a ceramics and weaving project.

    All of these youth will be going to the Kentucky State Fair with their entries. Haley Tharp also had a sewing entry, but did not qualify for state.

    In the livestock section, it was a very hot evening and our beef kids had a state show this past weekend so they decided not to come out with the heat.
