  • ‘Fun guys’ make appearance in the region

    Although the recent weather has suggested summer is not ready to end, the noticeable changing of the trees suggests fall is arriving in the Blue-grass State. Autumn is a beautiful time of year with its mums, pumpkins, and harvested fields, but it is also a popular time for the “fun guys” to appear.

    Fun guys?

    Oh!  You mean fungi!  Mushrooms!

  • Two win honors in 4-H shooting

    On Sept. 17, two Carroll County 4-H Rifle Shooters competed in the 2011 4-H state shooting competition at Wilmore.

  • Health and wealth challenge ends, forms are now due

    Six habits in six weeks — this has been the challenge we have given everyone in our eight-county Northern Kentucky area over the past six weeks.

    The challenge ended Sunday, Oct. 9, so now it is time to turn in those forms so you have a chance to win one of the nice prizes. Be sure to turn in your forms by 4:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14 using the online submission at www.ca.uky.edu/boone or in person at the Carroll County Extension Office. You cannot win unless you turn in your forms.

    Our ag/4-H Extension agent, Christin Herbst, worked with the Reality Store last Friday at Carroll County Middle School, assisting guidance counselor Beth Wallace and other CCMS staff.

  • ‘New face in town’ offers lesson on Extension history

    Rumor has it there is a new girl in town.

    I hear she is young, but energetic.  People tell me she is a third-generation agriculture agent, who attended school at the University of Kentucky and is a genuine people person. 

    Furthermore, I hear she’s working with the 4-H program as well. The talk is that she is honored to be in Carroll County, and eager to do all she can to assist its residents.

  • Sales closing dates for USDA Crop Insurance Programs approaching

    FSA State Executive Director John W. McCauley reminds Kentucky producers who wish to purchase a Federal crop insurance program policy for the 2012 crop year, of the following final fall sales closing dates:

    • Barley, Sept. 30

    • Wheat – Sept. 30

  • Extension Homemakers travel to Grant; families enjoy more meals at home

    Extension Homemaker members will travel to Grant County on Tuesday, Oct. 11 for their annual meeting with the other seven counties in the Northern Kentucky Area.

    “Salute Extension Homemakers” is the theme of this year’s meeting. Guest speaker is retired 1st Sgt. Pamela J.B. Luce, LPCC. Luce has a varied military career and currently serves on the board of directors of the Veterans Program Trust Fund.

    Special guest pianist is Agnes Beach Johnson, also know as, “The Doll Lady.”

  • Agricultural Investment Program approved for Carroll County

    At its August business meeting, the Kentucky Agricultural Development Board, chaired by Gov. Steve Beshear, approved $145,000 in agricultural development funds to establish a County Agricultural Investment Program here.

    The directors of the Carroll County Agriculture Development Fund Inc.  submitted a proposal to the county’s Agricultural Development Council and the Kentucky Agricultural Development Board to provide cost-share incentives to area farmers.

  • Program offers insight on adopting a gluten-free diet

    It is estimated that one in 133 Americans have gluten sensitivity or celiac disease today.

    Today at noon at the Exten-sion office, Diane Mason, RN, the Boone County Exten-sion agent for family and consumer sciences, will teach a program, “Going without Gluten.” There is no cost to attend. This is the September Extension Homemakers’ lesson, but everyone interested is invited to attend.

    With the onset of autumn and school activities, many folks are initiating fall cleaning and may be discovering old computers, video games systems, TVs, printers, cell phones, stereos, batteries, etc that are no longer used or do not work.
