  • Jan. 24 workshop shows how to grow the perfect tomato

    Have you ever grown the perfect tomato? Have you come close to growing a perfect tomato?

    Next Monday, Jan. 24, at 7 p.m. at the Carroll County Exten-sion Office there will be a workshop on growing the perfect tomato. Tim Coolong, Extension vegetable production specialist, will be presenting a program on growing the perfect tomato. When Tim and I were talking about the topic he said he didn’t think he had ever grown a perfect tomato but was sure he could talk about how to do it.

  • Healthy weight week is chance to begin making changes

    Jan. 16-22 is Healthy Weight Week promoting healthy lifestyles for kids and adults. This week is to encourage regular activity and eating right meant to help us develop healthy habits for our entire lifetime.

    What are some key points toward healthy lifetime habits? Just looking at common behaviors in our high speed society can answer this.

  • Extension program set for managing health, weight

    Did you make a New Year’s resolution to lose some weight? Maybe you did, or maybe not. Think about it, would you still like to have fun with friends as you work on losing that extra unhealthy weight in ways you can keep it off?

  • Keeping records, education opportunities

    The next Cooking with Shawn class will be Thursday, January 20, at 6 p.m. at the Carroll County Extension Office. I’m not sure what the topic will be but it will be good. This will be the last class for a while as Shawn will be having surgery on his elbow (see what extreme whisking will do to you). Classes will begin again when the doctor says he can safely whisk again. I am just giving Shawn a hard time but give him high kudos for his cookbook. Ruth Ann has read it cover to cover and I can’t wait to try some of the recipes.

  • Cattlemen’s meeting moved; educational sessions set

    The Carroll County Cattlemen’s Meeting that I mentioned in my article for Jan. 6 will now be Jan. 27 as part of the presentation by Ray Smith about decisions and options for our pastures and hay fields following the drought. 

    There will be a meal starting at 6 p.m. with the forage program starting at 7 p.m.

    Small ruminant production is on the rise in Kentucky, as farmers realize the potential of raising sheep and goats in the commonwealth.

  • New regulations gift cards will protect consumers

    Did you receive a “gift card” for Christmas this year? If so, your card is one of around $100 billion gift cards given yearly.

    Gift cards have increased yearly since they were first introduced, but many are never used. As one study showed, “27 percent of people receiving gift cards had not used them nearly a year later.” In 2006, $8 billion worth of gift cards were never used.

  • Firewood selections explained

    Every winter we look forward to the pleasures of warming our hands and feet by a blazing fire, mesmerized by the dancing flames.

    When buying firewood two factors will determine just how hot your fire is—seasoning and the kind of wood.

    Wood is made up of air and cellulose (wood fiber). The more air space that wood has, the less there is to burn. Buying wood with the heaviest/densest per unit volume will keep you toasty.

    Osage orange, hickory, black locust, all of the oaks, sugar maple and ash produce hot fires; plus they are easy to split.

  • Bond Information for producers

    The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Grain, Inspection, Packers and Stockyards Administration is informing cattle producers who have done business with Eastern Livestock Company, LLC, of their rights under the bond provisions of the Packers and Stock-yards Act.

  • Watch out for kitchen fires

    During the holidays and family gatherings, kitchens are used more than normal. Since the kitchen is a common place for fires to start, now is the time to review safety measures to prevent kitchen fires and know what to do if a fire does start.
    Here are some tips to prevent fires and burns:
    • Do not leave food cooking on the burners unattended. “Unattended cooking” is the “number one” cause of cooking fires.
    • Keep flammable materials away from burners and other heat sources.
