  • County attorney assists with guardian petitions to help local families

The last thing anyone wants to think about is not being able to take care of oneself or having to depend on loved ones. Worse, yet, is having to be a loved one and not being able to take care of them.

Even though these are not pleasant things to think about, they are things that every responsible adult should consider. Nobody plans on having a stroke, being in an automobile accident or developing Alzheimers or dementia. Sometimes life’s catastrophes cannot be avoided, but oftentimes, they can be planned for.

  • God works for the good of all as in this story of a heavenly hole-in-one

There were three people in heaven who decided one day to play a round of golf at the Heavenly Country Club.

The first man stepped up to the tee, hit his drive, and watched as it headed straight for the water hazard. Just as the ball was about to land in the water, he raised his club, pointed it out over the water, and the waters parted, allowing the ball to land on dry ground. He walked out between the two columns of water and hit a perfect second shot, right in the middle of the green. One of his partners said, “Wow, good shot, Moses!”

  • A quiet reflection on sexual abuse and gun violence

In 2001, a large task force of men and women in the Catholic Church began to be well-trained to educate people in our church about child sexual abuse.

Once this task force was equipped, all adults who had any contact with children or youth in church programs were required to take the course called “Protecting God’s Children,” to have a background check and to faithfully read a monthly bulletin provided on line about child sexual abuse for as long as their ministry involved children or youth.

  • Book provides pastor with needed ‘jolt’ to his faith

I have a confession. My walk with Christ received a much-needed jolt this week. This divinely-guided jolt arrived in the form of a book I purchased a few days after Christmas.

The book was about global missions, persecuted Christians, human suffering, doubt and the triumph of our crucified yet resurrected Lord. Sound interesting?  If your faith needs a jolt, then this book is for you.

  • I am No. 24601 — and so are you

In case you haven’t seen “Les Misérables” — go see it. In case you don’t fully understand the concept of the power of grace and mercy to change a human heart — go see it.

In case you’re caught up in the drive to make others pay for their wrongs and can’t see your own — go see it.

I heard it said once that all of life illustrates Bible doctrine, and this movie does just that.
