We are so familiar with the entrance of Jesus into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. It was a brief moment of triumph as people laid down their cloaks like a red carpet and waved palm branches with abandon. What a frenzy of welcome for this superhero. (Luke 19:35-38)

Immediately after, Luke says Jesus wept over that city. “If this day you only knew what makes for peace, but it is hidden from your eyes.” Jesus left Jerusalem a week later, carrying a cross to Calvary hill where he was crucified as a criminal — and people wept.

On the feast day of St. Bartholomew on Aug. 24, I meditated upon the reading of the day, John 1: 45-51.

Here we see Philip who found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote — Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.”  Then Philip invited Nathanael, “Come and see.”

Nathanael is identified as Bartholomew. Jesus called directly most of the Apostles. In the case of Bartholomew it was Philip who told him ‘come and see.’

Church celebrates its 55th anniversary

Calvary Apostolic Church, 1103 Eighth St., celebrates its 55th anniversary Friday, Aug. 26 starting at 7:30 p.m., with Elder Scott Kerr Jr. from Canton, Ohio and Saturday, Aug. 27, at noon, with Elder Kent Jordan from Indianapolis, Ind.

CAYR dinner planned for Aug. 26, 5-7 p.m.

A young boy and an old man were walking with a donkey when a group of people passed by.

“Isn’t that ridiculous that no one’s riding that donkey,” one person said.

So, the old man told the boy to ride the donkey.

Another group of people passed by and someone said, “That’s terrible! Look at that young boy riding that donkey while the old man walks.”
