  • Apostolic church plans community day event

The First Apostolic Church will host a Community Day Event at Point Park from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 17.

There will be gospel singing including the Chase Condon Band from Columbus, Ohio. Games for the children, hotdogs, chips, cookies, and drinks will also be served.

This event has been planned by the church members to let the Carrollton area see what the church is all about.  Everyone in the community is invited.

  • Don’t prejudge; take time to see for yourself

Have you ever thought that someone was really different than what they really were because of suppositions you made or things someone told you? Have you ever prejudged someone and then learned that they are not like what you thought — at all? Have you ever negatively stereotyped someone because of what they looked like, who they hung out with, or what they stood for and then found that they were actually a better person than what you thought they were? I mean, you even found out you liked them!

  • God alone should be the judge of others’ behaviors

In judging, we play God. A sign of idolatry is the inclination to judge. When people fail to satisfy our demands, we criticize and condemn them in our hearts, if not with our words.

The truth is that when we judge others – criticize, nit-pick, attack, condemn – we are literally acting like a god. We commit the sin of Lucifer, coveting the judgment seat reserved only for God. Scripture tells us clearly “There is one lawgiver and judge, he who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you that you judge your neighbor?” (James 4:12)

  • A cheeseburger, lunch with Jesus and makeup make for a good day

Yesterday when I was buying fish for dinner, Harry the seafood guy looked at me and said, “Today has been a good day.”

He didn’t say why, and I suppose I should’ve asked him.

Even so, as I drove home with my two salmon steaks and the solitary fresh, humungously jumbo shrimp with its head still on that Harry tossed in as a freebie, Harry’s words echoed in my thoughts.

Today has been a good day.

  • Cove Hill Church to host fish fry

Cove Hill Baptist Church, 4751 Mound Hill Road in Carrollton, will host a fish fry at 6 p.m. Friday, April 25. Cost is $5 a plate and includes fish, hush puppies, fries, cole slaw and a drink. All proceeds benefit Relay for Life. All are welcome.

  • God’s love for each person truly is unconditional

Ephesians 2:8-10 says: “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.”

  • Give troubles to Jesus, allow him to carry them

I am reminded of a story that some of you reading this may have heard before. It takes me back to before our first grandchild, Kaylee, was born. She will soon be 13, so you can do the math.

As some of you know, I like to work with wood and build furniture and things, so I had decided that I was going to build Kaylee all new nursery furniture. It was quite an undertaking, but I set out to build a baby bed, a dressing table with drawers and a chest of drawers. They would all be made by hand and using oak lumber. (Oak is my favorite.)
