The Rev. Jacob Straub has been named the new pastoral associate at St. John the Evanglist Catholic Church and Transfiguration of Our Lord Mission.

  • Summer = Vacation Bible School

We usually associate summer with many different things: swimming pools, being outside, a break from school, ice cream, fireworks on the Fourth of July, cookouts, etc. However, for many of us, a summer is not complete without Vacation Bible School. If you have been to a VBS or helped with a VBS you know what I am talking about.

I have wonderful memories of going to VBS in the church I grew up. There were snacks, games, crafts, music and a lot of hard working, dedicated people who loved me and wanted to teach me about Jesus.

  • Got rocks? It reminds you that God is working for us

Although I don’t think it’s terminal, it is chronic: I have a chronic case of CRS -- Can’t Remember Stuff.

That’s the diagnosis one of my co-workers gave me the other day. He may or may not have been joking.

I tell people all the time to please, please, please remind me of stuff. It’s the CRS, folks. I just can’t remember.

At least I’m not alone. The ancient Israelites had it too. They were always forgetting stuff, mostly the stuff God had done for them, even rescuing them from years of slavery in Egypt.

  • A good man that only had it half right

    Proverbs 20:7

7 The righteous who walks in his integrity—

blessed are his children after him!

He married Mary and took on five of her children, and on special occasions his two children from a previous marriage. In the beginning he worked two and three jobs to make ends meet.

The relationship took a while to bond itself together in this not so Brady Bunch family. After a while he was no longer Don, but dad. The family no longer used the word “Step” when referring to Mother, Father, and Siblings.

  • Experiencing the holy

    I love yoga -- pants.

Soft, comfy, forgiving. They’re great to wear around the house or to bed. They’re especially great to wear before, during and after you stop at the store and bring home a vanilla creme bundt cake and maybe slice into it one or 12 times too many.

Not that I’ve ever done that, but if I do, I’ve got the perfect pants for it.

Yoga itself I don’t know well enough to love. I love the idea of it, of wearing the clothes and being in a space that’s usually beautifully lit and serene.
