  • Is God involved with his creation?

It is an obvious fact that God created everything in our world and was pleased with his work. One of the well known arguments to that is the theory of evolution. But a less well known argument is that God is not actively involved with his creation. This theory is just as false as the theory of evolution.

Since God as creator is the explanation for the existence of the world and for human existence, it is creation that establishes our deepest and most essential relation to God: as creator and thus Lord.

  • Liturgy and our encounter with God

What a sweet consolation it is when we feel close to God in liturgy, with the help perhaps of inspiring music or a challenging homily or a strong connection with members of the assembly. But what happens when such consolations are not our regular experience? How can we encounter God in liturgy even when we’re not feeling “fed”? Such a question is familiar territory for most catechists.

  • When it seems like no one answers

Have you ever cried out for help and no one answered?  My daughter was upset with me a few nights ago.  We had gone through our nightly routine, and I had put her to bed and moved onto something else.  Not long after, I heard her crying…really crying.  So I went into her room and found the reason.  She needed me to do something (probably adjust the volume on her music), and she called out for me, but then no one came.

  • Only Jesus

    Hebrews 1:1-3 (KJV)

This great letter is written to Christian Jews, who were tempted, to revert back to Judaism. They had become discouraged, because they were being persecuted for living a Christian life.

  • Our safety is an illusion?

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler. You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day. Psalm 91:1-16

  • WWJD? You might be surprised

A few weeks ago, a woman called me with an idea for my column.

She had just read “In His Steps,” a book written in 1896 that sparked the “WWJD” (What Would Jesus Do?) phenomena in the 1990s, the WWJD bracelets, bumper stickers, refrigerator magnets, et al.

The book, written by Charles Sheldon, is a fictional story about a pastor who challenges his congregation not to do anything for an entire year without first asking, “What would Jesus do?” and then do that.
