    God is blessing us with autumn in the brilliant contrast of blue and white sky and the deliciously pleasant cool weather.

    This year the fall colors promise to be more spectacular than we have seen in a few years.

    The poet Gerard Manley Hopkins tells it like it is: “The world is charged with the grandeur of God. It will flame out, like shining from shook foil … Nature is never spent; there lives the dearest freshest deep down things.”

    Eighth annual youth conference is Sept. 22

    The Open Door Baptist Church, 1476 Highway 36 East in Carrollton will hold their 8th Annual Youth Conference on Saturday, Sept. 22 at 4 p.m. Dr. Dennis Corle will the the guest speaker. Corle is editor/publisher of Revival Fires and president of Revival Fires Baptist College. He travels all over the United States and Canada preaching God’s work.  Pastor Jerry Ison invites all youth to attend. Food, games and preaching will be provided.

  • Sept. 29 event is more than a walk; funds help program match a child with a mentor

    Sept. 29 is the date for the annual Big Brothers Big Sisters of Carrollton Walk-a-Thon. We’ll meet at 9 a.m. at the county park and walk for as long or as little as inspiration will carry us.

    Of course, the core of a “walk” is walkers, and we certainly seek those. Envelopes are available at the Big Brothers Big sisters office at First Baptist Church. Please consider joining us for the fund raising event.

    I came across a story in which a fifth-grade teacher asked her class to look at TV commercials and see if they could use them in some way to communicate ideas about what God is like.

    Psalm 8:2 says “From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise because of your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger.”

    Life is full of choices. We choose daily different directions and options – everything from the color of the shirt we will wear to what we will eat for dinner.

    Everything in life is a choice, and everything we do is based on a decision. As we grow older, we sense the importance of making the right decisions. God gives us an open-book test; this life comes with an instruction manual called the Bible.

  • No need to have fear; Belief in Jesus removes death’s ‘victory, sting’

    When people ask me what I do at my job at the newspaper, specifically what topics I write about, I tell them the shorthand version: old people, dead people and God.

    Actually, I cover a lot more than that, but those three — old people, dead people and God — are the three areas that seem to fall to me. This past week I wrote stories about four people who had died, and only one of them I would consider old.

    Of those four people, I attended three memorial services. As I write this, I have two services to attend in the coming week.

    Stahl, Helm to perform at Worthville Baptist

    Keyboardist/vocalist Dave Stahl and saxophonist Freddy Helm will perform at 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 26, at Worthville Baptist Church.

    The duo has entertained throughout the state for three years, performing regularly at  Kentucky State Parks, as well as community events, corporate events, conventions and the Scottsburg Jamboree.

    A love offering will be received. The public is invited to attend.
