  • Several  years ago I had a close friend who had had breast cancer.  Seven years, almost to the day, when she was reaching the point of the doctors declaring her cured, she found out that it had progressed to bone cancer. 

    Sherry was an exceptional friend and co-worker.  She was remarkable; always with a smile on her face and a special ear for listening to anyone’s problems.  She continued to work as a research nurse at Emory until her illness took too much of her strength. 

  • We have had an especially hot summer. Keeping food safe and properly cooled has probably been a challenge if you have been eating outdoors, camping or on a picnic.

    Using proper coolers, ice packs and other cooling methods is so very important when not indoors. But be sure, as the hot days of summer start winding down, that the food in your refrigerator is still safe.

  • Every family begins with a marriage. Two weeks ago, my family got together in California to celebrate our parents’ marriage with a huge party for their 60th anniversary.

    It was a 1950s-themed party, minus the poodle skirts and black leather jackets.

    My sister transformed her garage into a ’50s-style combination soda shoppe and hot rod garage, complete with a juke box in the corner playing classic rock ’n’ roll music.

  • Calvary Apostolic Church, 1103 Eighth St., Carrollton, invites the public to help celebrate the church’s 56th anniversary and 24th Pastoral on Aug 17-18.

    At 7:30 p.m. Friday, Elder Darrell Hale of Lapaz, Ind., will speak. At noon Saturday, Elder Scott Kerr Sr. of Canton, Ohio, will be featured. A meal will be served after each service. For more information, call (502) 732-5808.
