  • The whole reason I started cooking was my mother. She was a self-taught, brilliant cook who could effortlessly whip up any recipe with just a glance.

    After years of eating and enjoying her food, I decided that I would give up these silly dreams of becoming a neurosurgeon and pursue a career in the hospitality industry.

    I started out washing dishes at The Tasteful Chef in Ghent when I was 14 as a part-time job after school. I thought it was ironic that my first job cooking didn’t involve any actual cooking, but I figured everyone had to start somewhere.

  • Lance Corporal Seth E. Hill, a Carrollton native, has received the Navy and Marine  Corps Achievement Medal for professional achievement in the superior performance while serving as a specialized search dog handler, Military Working Dog Platoon, I Marine Headquarters Group, I Marine Expeditionary Force Forward in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

    Hill served in the unit from Dec. 1, 2011, to June 20.

  • James and Carla Luhn of Scipio, Ind.  and James Mattingly of Carrollton, Ky. announce the upcoming wedding of their daughter, Erin Michelle Mattingly to Donald Gene Nelson II, son of Donald and Shelley Nelson of Carrollton.

    Friday, Sept. 14: Movie day with refreshments, 9:30 a.m.

    Monday, Sept. 17: Euchre/Rook, 10 a.m.; ice cream sundaes, noon.

    Tuesday, Sept. 18: Gentiva bingo 10 a.m.

  • A “Senior Picnic at the Point” is the theme for the 2012 Carroll County Senior Event tomorrow evening.

    We invite all senior citizens to participate in an evening of fun, good food, games and entertainment plus enjoy socializing with old friends and meeting new. The gates open at 4:30 p.m. followed by a delicious picnic served at 5:30 p.m.

    Guests may participate in games or just sit back and enjoy the music. We also invite our guests to have a photo taken as a remembrance of the evening.

  • The Carroll County Conservation District will be holding a field day on Sept. 20 at 5:30 p.m. The field day, located at the Four Mile Creek Outdoor Class-room in Carroll County, will be focused on wildlife habitat.

  • As I sit here thinking about the last three weeks, I have nothing but great things to say about Carroll County. 

    Thank you so much for welcoming me into your community. You certainly have a wonderful staff at the Cooperative Extension office. 

  • Speedway Children’s Charities and Kentucky Speedway is hosting the Laps for Charity benefit Sept. 20 from 6-8 p.m.

    Participants can take three laps in their personal vehicle around the 1.5 mile superspeedway behind a pace vehicle for $30 and have their picture taken in Victory Lane for an additional $10.

    Laps for Charity is open to the public and no reservations are required.

    Drivers must be 18 years of age or older, and a valid driver’s license and proof of registration is required.
