  • The Norman Rockwell painting of the family sitting around the dinner table seems to have been relegated to bygone days. The busier we get, the harder it is to have a family meal.

    According to a recent study conducted by Columbia University, some of the benefits of sitting down to a family meal include greater school success, instilling family values and dealing with weight concerns.

    It’s State Fair time!

    Today marks the opening of the Kentucky State Fair in Louisville. Located at the Kentucky Fair Exposition Center, 937 Phillips Lane, Louisville, the State Fair runs from Aug. 20-30.

    With all the sights and sounds, the State Fair has something for every member of the family:

  • The Carroll County Public Library has been designated as an official Passport Acceptance Facility for new and renewed passports. Application forms are available at the library or online. You must bring a current passport photo (available at RiteAid) as well as proper identification and payment. For more information call the library, (502) 732-7020.

  • Like most people who fall down into the rabbit hole known as researching one’s family history, I got carried away building my tree, following every lead and going in 15 different directions at once.

  • Sanders Baptist Church, 245 McDaniel St. in Sanders will host its fourth Sunday hymn sing, Sunday, Aug. 23, at 6:30 p.m.

    Kentucky State Fair opens and runs through Aug. 30, at the state fairgrounds in Louisville.

    Carrollton Homemakers Club meets at 1:30 p.m. at the Carroll County Extension Office on Floyd Drive.

    West Carroll Water District meets at 6 p.m. in the Carrollton Utilities conference room, 225 Sixth St.

    Carroll County Animal Support meets at 6:30 p.m. at the second floor meeting room of the Carroll County courthouse.
