  • The Kentucky Department of Corrections honored employees across the state at its annual Corrections Awards Luncheon held Sept. 4 in Lexington.

     Officer Stacy Warren started with Probation and Parole in the Carrollton office on Jan. 16, 2012, after transferring from RCC as a classification and treatment officer. 

  • The 1963 Class of Carrollton High School will hold its 50th Class Reunion at the Butler State Resort Park Conference Center on Saturday, Oct. 5 from 6-11 p.m. All class members are invited plus their guests.   • Ohio Valley United Charities, Inc., challenges the youth of Carroll, Gallatin, Henry, Owen and Trimble counties to compete for up to $3,000 in cash awards for service projects to their respective communities in conjunction with “Make A Difference Day” Saturday, Oct. 26.

  • September and October is a busy time for Kentucky’s apple growers—both for the commercial and home operation. In fact, I have received a couple of calls already about the best time to harvest apples this season.

    The best and most time-tested method of judging when to pick fruit is the taste method. When enough starch has been converted to sugar and the flavor is developed, the fruit is ready to eat.

  • All young people need opportunities to develop leadership skills. By learning to interact with others and becoming engaged members of their communities, they learn they can make a difference. 

    In order for youth to be prepared to work in partnership with adults, they need to develop and/or enhance their leadership skills. Leadership education prepares youth to:

    l Manage time

    l Work as a team

    l Set goals

    l Start conversations

    l Facilitate meetings

    l Solve problems

  • The Food and Drug Administration recently finalized the definition of the term “gluten-free” on food labels. All manufacturers that want to use the gluten-free wording on their products must adhere to strict guidelines.

    According to the FDA, the term gluten-free now refers to foods that are either inherently gluten-free or foods that do not contain any ingredient that is:

    • A gluten-containing grain (e.g., spelt or wheat)

    • Derived from a gluten-containing grain that has not been processed to remove gluten (e.g., wheat flour)

  • The Carroll County High School class of 1993 will hold its 20 year reunion at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26, at Down on Main (upstairs).   • Donnie and Maggie Ball of Carrollton announce the upcoming wedding of their daughter, Chasity Taylor to Travis Snow, son of Bobby Snow of Carrollton and the late Alice Snow.

    The bride-elect is a teacher for Carroll County Schools. She is the granddaughter of Harriett Sharp Johnson of Carrollton and the late Owen “Billie” Sharp.

    The groom-to-be works at PMC Organometallix as a chemical operator. He is the grandson of Margaret Smoot of Carrollton and the late David Smoot, and Margaret Abbott of Hanover, Ind. and the late Norman Abbott.
