Carroll County Assistant Superintendent Bill Hogan said the school district is working on ways to see more students continue their education at the college level.

At the April 26 board of education meeting, he said the school district is looking at ways to get students starting college early, completing their high school requirements and being able to transition into college at a higher rate with the credits they have already earned.

Kaylyn Ringwald, daughter of, April and Larry Rabourn of Carrollton has been recognized by the United States Achievement Academy as a student of excellence in Mathematics. Kaylyn is in the eighth grade at Carroll County Middle School. Her teacher, Michelle Hawkins, nominated her for the award. She is the granddaughter of Marjorie Rabourn of Turners Station and the late L.G. “Buster” Rabourn and Diane Hornbeck of Paris, Ky. and the Rev. Butch and Dian Ringwald of Virginia.

Elizabeth Hayley Franklin, daughter of Ben and Crystal Franklin of Carrollton, will graduate from Northern Kentucky University with a bachelor’s degree in communications and a minor in public relations at 11 a.m. Sunday, May 6.

Her family along with Erin Mattingly will hold a celebration in her honor on that day at 4 p.m. at the former Reiffen’s Steakhouse, 1968 Hwy 227 in Carrollton. All family and friends are invited.

Responding to a demand for more high tech workers, educators across the country are placing greater emphasis on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, often referred to by the acronym STEM. In Carroll County Schools, however, an additional letter, A for the arts, is equally important.  Students focus on STEAM, not just STEM.

“The arts help students develop the creativity, critical thinking skills and innovation that are important in the 21st Century workplace,” said Lisa James, superintendent of the Carroll County School District.
