  • Assembly offers students chance to ‘learn to lead’

    Kathryn Winn Primary held its quarterly assembly Friday morning, showcasing student talents and recognizing their achievements. But what made this one different from all the others is who was leading it.

    It wasn’t Principal Gerda Wise or any of the teachers. It was led by the students.

  • Education sees shift toward non-fiction

    While reading is more important than ever, what students are reading in school is changing. The days of all students reading the exact same thing are over. An increase in the quantity of nonfiction reading is adding flexibility to the way that teachers teach and choice to the texts that students read.

    “We are focusing on what students need the most and on what will be the most useful to them in their daily lives,” said Dan Mahoney, chair of the Carroll County High School English department.

    The menu listed below is for all Carroll County schools, except for Friday, Oct. 25, Kathryn Winn’s menu will offer, fish, Mac and cheese, peas and carrots, Nantucket veggies, apple and fruit cocktail, the breakfast is the same.

    Thursday, Oct. 17: Taco on tortilla, lettuce, tomato, cheese, salsa, refried beans, apple, diced pears; breakfast: Mini French toast sticks.

    Friday, Oct. 18: Fish, mac and cheese, peas and carrots, Nantucket veggies, apple, fruit cocktail; breakfast: Donuts.

  • Homecoming is about tradition, spirit and pride

    A school is the sum of its past, and tradition, spirit and pride are a threefold cord that holds it together. Homecoming brings the past into focus by continuing old traditions and creating new ones. These traditions give alumni a way to connect with a school as it is now, and they give current students a way to connect with a school as it once was. 

    This year’s homecoming celebration demonstrated the spirit, pride and tradition, not only of the high school, but also of the entire Carroll County School District.

    Friday, Oct. 4: Sloppy Joe with bun, potato wedges, kale, apple, pineapple tidbits; breakfast: Donuts.

  • Panther Pursuit kicks off Homecoming Week

     

    Carroll County High School Homecoming Week kicked off Monday with the Panther Pursuit, a 5K race through campus. Sixty runners and walkers participated in the event. Homecoming Week continued Wednesday with Powderpuff, followed by the parade and bonfire Thursday. The Homecoming king and queen will be crowned at 7 p.m. Friday before the football game.

  • Schools make some improvement, miss accountability goal

    The Carroll County School District grew from a 48.9 Annual Measurable Objective to a 49.6 on Kentucky’s Next-Generation Achievement testing system from 2011-12 to 2012-13.  Ken-tucky’s assessment and accountability system determines which schools and school districts are improving and which are not.

    Friday, Sept. 27: Grilled chicken sandwich with bun, lettuce/tomato/pickle, French fries, apple, pears; breakfast: Pancakes on a stick.

    Monday, Sept. 30: Cheeseburger Mac, California blend, peas, peach cups, applesauce. Breakfast: Sausage biscuit.
