Summer is over, but Sprite is working to help students swing back into the school year with newly refurbished recreational spaces.

The Sprite Spark Parks Project for Schools program is giving local schools nationwide the opportunity to spruce up areas on their campuses where students can play, stay fit and be refreshed all school year long.

Family Ties Resource Center sponsors its annual Ready Fair from 4-6 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 4, for Head Start, Kathryn Winn Primary and Cartmell Elementary students at Cartmell.

Lots of information and free items will be available to families to help make sure students start the school year right.

Family Ties will be giving each student who attends a bag of school supplies for the new year. There also will be several community agencies on site providing an abundance of information about their programs for parents and students.

Deciding between what they want and what they can afford is the task the Carroll County Board of Education is currently grappling with.

Project manager John Gilbert and engineer Laithe Ross of RossTarrant Architects presented the board with the price tag for each of the two options for the drainage pond at the newly renovated Cartmell Elementary at the board’s July 21 meeting.

Everyone seemed to expect a gap in price, but board members and architects alike appeared genuinely shocked at the figures presented. 

Carrollton Housing Authority held a dinner to celebrate youngsters’  desire to learn etiquette, manners and proper eating techniques. The event, hosted by housing authority director Ray Clem, pictured at left standing, was held in their offices July 14. They all enjoyed a full-course meal together.
