With much of Carroll County battling flooding and road closings, a potential water hazard was also a topic of discussion at Thursday’s Board of Education meeting.

A pond built to improve a drainage problem that has long been present between Cartmell Elementary and the high school recently began filling up due to all the rain and a pump was required to empty it. Board member Tommy Unker questioned not only the amount of water being held in the pond but the security of it as well. 

Linda Cruz, a sophomore at Carroll County High School, has been accepted to the Carol Martin Gatton Academy, Class of 2013.
Gatton Academy at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, is Kentucky’s only state-supported, residential program for high school students with interests in advanced science and math careers.
Cruz will be taking courses with fellow Gatton Academy students and WKU under-graduate students. It is one of 16 such programs in the nation.
She is the daughter of Luz Maria Cruz and Guillermo Aguazul of Carrollton.

Good work, good deeds, good people and, in this case, good teachers, ultimately are recognized and rewarded.

Alice England, a kindergarten teacher at Kathryn Winn Primary, recently received 50 LeapFrog reading books through LeapFrog’s new “Like. Give. Read." program. LeapFrog asked Facebook fans to nominate their kindergarten teachers for their hard work and dedication to teaching young children to learn to read. The names were included in a random drawing for up to 1,000 classrooms to receive the books.
