  • Hawkins benefits from full-ride county consortium scholarship

    A scholarship from the Carroll County Training Consortium provided Mary Hawkins with opportunities that led to a full-time job in quality assurance at Dow Corning’s Carrollton plant.

    The scholarship paid Hawkins’ full tuition at Jefferson Community and Technical College and for all of her books for her two-year degree in Applied Process Technology.

  • Carroll County Middle School next in line for renovations

    Now that the renovation of Cartmell Elementary School is complete and the Early Childhood Learning Center is in its second year, Carroll County Schools Superintendent Lisa James and the Board of Education are turning their attention to upgrading and updating Carroll County Middle School.

    The project will include a new or renovated gymnasium, as well as renovations to two basements below the existing building, James said in a phone interview Monday, to create space for an arts and humanities program and project-based learning.

in leadership class

    Students in Lynn Eaglin’s leadership class are seeking real solutions to real problems at Carroll County High School. These students who have already met their college and career readiness benchmarks on the ACT are now applying 21st century learning skills to tackle some real challenges from increasing school spirit to reducing the drop-out rate.

  • Payton, Clark named students of the month at JCTC

    Two students were honored recently in a new program called the JCTC Carrollton Campus Student of the Month Award.

    DeVonna Payton  and Marty Clark were honored for the months of August and Septem-ber, respectively, for outstanding academic achievement and campus involvement.

    Clark enrolled at JCTC in the fall 2011 and is pursuing an associate’s degree. He plans to transfer to Lindsey Wilson College to complete a bachelor’s degree in human services and counseling.

  • CCHS Band students learn technique, culture from Indian musician

    Two Carroll County High School band students recently had the opportunity to play with a world-renowned Indian musician. 

    Juniors Kiana Benhoff and Sarah Hawkins played trumpet and alto saxophone, respectively, with Sandip Burman, a famous tabla and sitar player whose credentials include performing with George Harrison of the Beatles and premiere banjo player Béla Fleck, and performing at the Kennedy Center in New York.

    Burman visited Carroll County High School Wednesday, Sept. 26, for the second time in two years to give a master class for the band.

    Burns recognized as commended student

    Principal Thomas Stephens of Carroll County High School announced that Lyndie Burns has been named a commended student in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program.

    A letter of commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corp., which conducts the program, will be presented by the principal to Burns.
