  • Sparta man indicted for filing false tax returns

    The U.S. Attorney’s Office and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) jointly announced today that an indictment was unsealed yesterday charging a Sparta, Ky., man with filing false tax returns.

    The indictment alleges that Meredith L. Lawrence, 61, filed false tax returns in 2005, 2006, and 2007. According to the indictment, Lawrence’s income was greater than he reported on his returns.

    Lawrence was arraigned yesterday and entered a plea of not guilty to each count of the indictment. Trial is scheduled for December 21, 2011.

  • Most Kentuckians aren’t going to vote on Nov. 8

    Without a hot race to motivate voters, Kentucky is caught in a political malaise that will drive down turnout on Nov. 8, the state’s chief election officer predicted Monday.

    Secretary of State Elaine Walker said she expects between 25 and 28 percent of the state’s registered voters to decide whether to re-elect Democratic Gov. Steve Beshear or replace him with one of two challengers, Republican David Williams or Independent Gatewood Galbraith.

  • Beshear announces 45 new jobs in NKy.

    Gov. Steve Beshear recently announced Johnson Controls Inc. will expand its Northern Kentucky automotive battery operation, creating 45 new jobs.

    The company’s $24.2 million investment will increase the plant’s square footage to accommodate additional production lines and warehousing space.

  • Veteran Kentucky AP photojournalist Ed Reinke dies Tuesday at age 60

    LOUISVILLE — Ed Reinke, an award-winning Associated Press photographer who traveled worldwide and was known for his striking pictures of Kentucky news and sporting events, died Tuesday following an injury, according to his family. He was 60.

    Reinke was taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Edgewood on Oct. 2 after he fell and suffered a head injury while covering the IndyCar race at Kentucky Speedway in Sparta.

  • Statewide smoking ban likely to be discussed

    A statewide smoking ban will again come before lawmakers when they head back to Frankfort in January, but just how much support such a measure will have is unclear.

    “There is no question that it would save the state money in terms of what it pays out for Medicaid,” said state Rep. Jody Richards, D-Bowling Green.

  • Bus crash documentary underway

    Now that Quinton Higgins has the future of his own children to worry about, he spends more time thinking about the 1988 bus crash in Carroll County that he survived.

    Twenty-seven people perished on that dark interstate.

    “I don’t know why it is, but I tell my kids all the time about it,’’ he said. “I think more about what happened now than ever.’’

  • One person dies in motorcycle crash in Trimble County

    Kentucky State Police Troopers from Post 5 responded to a fatal collision  at 9:38 p.m.  Wednesday, Oct. 12 in Trimble County.

    The investigation revealed that Patrick Moore, 27, of Sulphur, was operating a motorcycle near the 9900 block of U.S. 421 in Milton when he apparently failed to negotiate a curve, resulting in impact with a nearby guardrail. Both Moore and his passenger, Catherine Nicole Straw (27 years old from Sulphur), were thrown from the motorcycle during impact, according to a state police news release.

  • ELECTION 2011: Secretary of State candidates believe in their backgrounds
