    Louisville Gas and Electric Company and Kentucky Utilities Company Tuesday plan to invest $2.2 billion in their electric and natural gas system to improve safety, reduce outage times and enhance service, though such improvements likely mean higher rates for customers.

    Kentucky Speedway announced it is adding another surface course layer to its racing surface in preparation for the 2017 season. Work will be done in October.

    In order to comply with Farm Service Agency program eligibility requirements, all producers are encouraged to visit the Carrollton office to file an accurate crop certification report for 2017 by the applicable deadline.

    The following acreage reporting dates are applicable for the Carrollton Office:

    Nov. 15, 2016 - Grass certifications. (Ex: alfalfa, mixed hay and mixed pasture)

    Dec. 15, 2016 - Small grains including wheat, oats, barley

    Jan. 2, 2017 - Honey

    Jan. 15, 2017 - Peaches and canola

  • Lt. Gov. Jenean Hampton recognized

    FRANKFORT - Lt. Gov. Jenean Hampton was awarded the 2016 Role Model of the Year by the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club of the Bluegrass on Friday at their 11th Annual Recognition Awards Luncheon.

    Each year the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club of the Bluegrass asks their students to vote on one male and one female role model of the year. The students selected Lt. Gov. Hampton as one of their 2016 Role Models of the Year.

    Hampton was introduced by her relations manager, Cody Patterson, before he presented her the 2016 Role Model of the Year award.

  • Walkers take to the streets Sept. 17, to fight suicide

    Suicide is the tenth leading cause of death in the United States, yet suicide is preventable. More than 400 people from throughout Madison are expected to participate in the second annual Madison Out of the Darkness Community Walk hosted by the Indiana Chapter at 9 a.m. Sept. 17, at Bicentennial Park.

    This fundraising walk supports the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s local and national education and advocacy programs and its bold goal to reduce the annual rate of suicide 20 percent by 2025.

  • Benefit to be held Sept. 24, at Trimble

    Family and friends are throwing a benefit for Robert Brierly of Henry County, due to his living situation and continuing health issues, according to information from Jennifer Allgeier.

    Brierly lost his home after the death of his wife a few years ago, and he lived in a daughter’s basement until she sold her home, Allgeier said. For a little while after that, he lived in a camper.
