  • Rand says emergency measures will help area’s tornado victims

    Rep. Rick Rand, D-Bedford, joined House and Senate leaders and members in announcing legislation that would assist owners of buildings damaged in the March 2 tornadoes with tax relief. The bill would also help schools and staff suffering with potential loss of funds due to absences caused by the disaster.

  • Cost of Kentucky courthouses questioned by lawmakers

    Concerns about state debt has slowed construction on courthouses around Kentucky after a decade where the state built or expanded 60 courthouses.

    Since 2005, the state has completed 26 judicial centers and 14 remain under way at a cost of $590 million.

    The General Assembly hasn’t funded new courthouses, however, in two years and doesn’t have any new ones funded in the proposed Senate and House two-year budgets being debated.

  • Traffic changes announced for bridge

    The Indiana Department of Transportation and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet hosted a public meeting Thursday to announce traffic changes that will take effect next month after the April 25-29 construction-related closure of the Milton-Madison Bridge. Traffic plans were on display during an open house at the Brown Gym in Madison.

    The dates of the temporary closure are subject to change depending on weather conditions and river levels.

  • Henry County woman enters guilty plea in area animal cruelty case

    During a pretrial hearing Monday in Henry County District Court, Terri L. Smith, 51, of Campbellsburg, waived her right to a jury trial and entered a guilty plea to one count of second-degree cruelty to animals, a Class A misdemeanor.

  • Graves tackles Campbellsburg wifi problems

    Bandwidth – or, rather, the lack of it – is the root of what’s ailing the free wireless internet wifi system being provided by the City of Campbellsburg.

    That was the diagnosis given Monday to City Council by Brent Graves of PoweredOn in Carrollton, who was hired more than a year ago to set up the system meant to provide city residents with free wireless internet access.

  • Weight limited lowered on Milton-Madison bridge

    Law enforcement agencies from Kentucky and Indiana are posted at each end of the Milton-Madison Bridge to strictly enforce the new 3-ton weight limit.

    The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet lowered the posted weight limit for the bridge from 15 tons to three tons based on new inspections that showed continued deterioration of the 82-year-old bridge.

  • Vincent to challenge dismissal by Trimble County schools

    Former Trimble County educator and athletic coach Jeff Vincent will appeal his dismissal by the Trimble County School system under the provisions of Kentucky Statute KRS 161.790 regarding the “Termination of contract by board—Administrative hearing tribunal—Sanctions.

    Lisa Y. Gross, Press Secretary, Kentucky Department of Education Division of Communications, confirmed Monday that an administrative tribunal hearing for Vincent has been scheduled.

  • Owen Electric wins approval to alter its rate structure

    The Kentucky Public Service Commission has approved a request by Owen Electric Cooperative Corp. to alter its rate structure to more accurately reflect the cost of serving its residential and small commercial customers.

    The changes are designed to leave Owen Electric’s total revenue unchanged. Bills for individual customers will change, depending on the amount of electric consumption. The PSC ordered that the new rates be phased in over the next three years.

  • Beshear issues consumer protection order activating price gouging statute

    After multiple tornadoes and severe storms caused heavy damage across the state, Gov. Steve Beshear Saturday signed a consumer protection executive order at the request of Attorney General Jack Conway to implement Kentucky’s price-gouging laws statewide as of Friday, March 2.

  • Firefighter Andrew Stark remained on post

    Nineteen-year-old firefighter Andrew Stark watched as dark, swirling storm clouds rushed at him as he stood outside Milton Fire Station No. 2 on Friday afternoon. A number of volunteers preparing for a planned ALS fundraiser set for the following day had been in earlier but had scattered for their homes when the storm warnings sounded. Now Stark manned the station alone.
